Shaunavon made it to Stage Four
Hockeyville 2006 Competitions

Kraft Hockeyville, presented by Kraft Canada Inc. and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation , is the unique and exciting program designed to find out which Canadian community stands above all the others.

“Community Spirit + Hockey = HOCKEYVILLE”; all across the country, cities and small towns alike got to show their stuff as they vied for the title.

Salmon River, Nova Scotia took away the “Kraft Hockeyville 2006” trophy and won the experience of a lifetime:

· Kraft Hockeyville 2006 trophy;

· NHL exhibition game;

· $25,000 in upgrades to the arena donated by The Home Depot; and

· $10,000 in hockey equipment donated by Sport Maska Inc. to be donated to a grassroots hockey program within the community that fits within the criteria of the NHLPA Goals & Dreams fund.

There were 5 stages in the competition with 5 Regions across the country competing. Shaunavon made it through the first rounds and went from 1 of 450 communities in Stage 1 all the way to 1 of 25 in the 4th Stage. For the final and 5th stage only One community from each Region were competing.

Congratulations to Salmon River, Nova Scotia on winning the Hockeyville Challenge 2006.

Hockeyville Challenge gave us an opportunity to show our community spirit and show what can be done when everyone works together. Many residents happily participated in the making of a video to show why we thought Shaunavon should be Hockeyville 2006. Others took the 'Decorating Challenge' and made great efforts to show their Hockeyville Spirit. The Hockeyville Scavenger Hunt was enjoyed by all who participated. Round 4 was played out in Kingston, Ontario where Shaunavon represented by Carolyn Illerbrun and Jay Meyer made a valiant effort to move us to the next level. All the communities who were still in the running by June 9/06 were invited to showcase their town in this 4th round of the contest. Read more about the trip or view the photos here

The Community of Shaunavon has benefited in many ways from our journey in the Kraft Hockeyville Competition. The Hockeyville committee hopes that the spirit of Hockeyville will continue to live in our community every day.

To all our friends we would like to extend a huge Thank-you for your support and taking the time to vote on the web, cell phones and land lines during our quest for Kraft Hockeyville.  Unfortunately  SW Saskatchewan will not be hosting an NHL game as we were not crowned Hockeyville.  We played a good game, talked to the judges and they were impressed, but we came up a little short in the votes.

It has been a bit of an emotional ride, but we are very proud of what our community , our friends and our families have done to help us get to be one of the top 25 communities in the competition.
