The Grand Coteau Museum  (as it was originally called) was organized on August 6, 1931 by the Canadian Club of Shaunavon.    From 1931 to 1957, exhibits were housed in one room of a two-roomed school.    In 1957 , the school building was sold to the Town of Shaunavon, moved to the present location on Centre Street and renovated.  In the 1970's plans were set in motion to expand the building to better serve the needs of the community.

On July 12, 1980, the Grand Coteau Heritage and Cultural Centre officially opened.  The facility is  municipally operated and incorporates an Art Gallery, Natural History Room, Heritage Rooms, Tourist Information Area, Library and Community Room.

The Art Gallery host traveling art exhibitions of regional, provincial and occasionally national significance.  The months of May and July are set aside to feature exhibits by Shaunavon School students or of local interest.

In the Natural History Room , one can view a variety of animals, birds, rodents and insects, along with rocks and fossils found in Southern Saskatchewan.  A discovery area, for hands-on activities, is in the process of being developed.

In the Heritage Rooms , the colourful heritage of Shaunavon's settlers, business, schools and churches can be explored.

Tours of our Centre will be provided upon request.  Questions or information regarding Shaunavon and its' residents are welcomed by our staff, as historical research of Shaunavon and region is an ongoing process.

The Community Room is available for rent to the public for meetings or small gatherings.  Please contact our staff for bookings or further information.
