| Local residents were treated to the colour and pageantry of one of the country's most recognizable traditions as the RCMP Musical Ride visited our town for a special show. The picture of the red-coated Mountie in a broad brimmed Stetson hat, riding a black horse, might be one of Canada's most celebrated images. The Musical Ride has a long heritage in Canada. It was first developed from a desire by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain both themselves and the local community. Between 500-600 people packed the bleachers behind the Shaunavon Hospital to watch the Musical Ride. Highlights of the evening included an appearance by local resident Ann Ruetz, the grandmother of rider Rob Ruetz. (Nine of the current riders are from Saskatchewan). Other dignitaries included MLA Wayne Elhard, MP David Anderson and Shaunavon Mayor Sharon Dickie. Stage entertainment leading up to the Ride was provided by Conrad Sandberg, Kevin Sargeant, Michelle Hanson, Nicole Hanson and the Poverty Plainsmen. Riders and horses later gathered along the edge of the field to pose for photographs and talk to the huge throng of residents who had attended the event. About 225 people enjoyed a barbecue beef and steak supper at the curling rink following the show. The days's festivities concluded with a dance featuring the music of the Poverty Plainsmen at the Curling Rink. | ||
