Project 2002
A New Sport, Culture and Recreation Complex for Shaunavon and DistrictProject 2002 is under construction for a new skating rink and curling complex for the community of Shaunavon and District. (View the floor plan here lower level or upper level) The complex will be built as a year round facility emphasizing the off season use of the building as well as the seasonal skating and curling. Office and meeting room space will be utilized as well as providing a larger lounge area and much needed storage. The estimated cost of the project is 7 million dollars. This figure has been derived in working with an architectural firm on the square footage of the building and cost per square foot, less some salvage. In order to save costs we are looking to salvage the existing concrete floors, and much of our refrigeration equipment from the arena side. The project will benefit the community of Shaunavon and District. The existing facilities are well used in our rural based community. Serving a population of over 3100 urban and rural residents from Shaunavon, Rural Municipalities of Arlington, Grassy Creek, Wise Creek, White Valley, Carmichael and Bone Creek, the present facility is a focal point in the community. Both facilities are aging with the original structures constructed in 1956 and 1962. The community has had to assessments completed on the buildings in the past 15 years and both outlined information regarding age and life span of the facilities and a variety of code and energy deficiencies. The new structure will strive to serve the needs of the community for both winter and off season use without duplicating existing structures in the community. The facility will be built on Town of Shaunavon property Shaunavon's facility will service the community and surrounding municipalities as well as village populations that have joined our school system. Some events held in the facility are targeted at drawing people from all over the south west. The Project 2002 Committee is taking a proactive approach of the replacement of the facilities to ensure that our community will not be without our rink complex for a winter season. This project will have a major impact on our community and area. The facility has proven its importance to the community in a number of areas including providing active living, social aspects, and economic aspects. It brings a higher quality of life to our community along with community spirit. The facility brings people to our community as well as retaining current residents. Project 2002 is seeking support from individuals, businesses, corporations, service clubs/community groups and government. In recognition of cash donations Project 2002 has devised the following program. Commitments are being sought over a five-year period.
Cash donations are eligible for a charitable tax receipt.
