Rink Complex The Jubilee Arena and Curling club are separate facilities joined by a common concession. Both rinks feature artificial ice surfaces and heaters. The Curling rink has five sheets of ice and a lounge. Both facilities house numerous winter activities for the community. As well, both facilities have cement floors which accommodate off season events such as trade fairs, dances and auction sales. Our town also maintains a lighted outdoor skating rink. The senior hockey team, the Badgers, are a huge draw to the rink. They play in the White Mud Hockey League with seven other teams. The games are thrilling, fierce and competitive. Minor hockey and the Sliver Blades figure skating group keep all the youngsters in town off the streets and busy in the winter. We can also boast about our four 'no hit' teams. The Curling rink has hosted major curling events such as the Scott Tournament of Hearts won by Sandra Petersen-Schmirler who later advanced to win her first Canadian and World titles. Other curling events in our rink have been Provincials, Ladies and Men's Southerns, Ladies Intermediate Provincials and 16 & under Provincials. The skating rink was built first. Work on the footings commenced on June 1, 1956. After the rafters where erected a high wind came up and blew the structure down. The damaged rafters were salvaged and sold to Frontier to use in their smaller rink. New rafters were erected and the rest of the shell without mishap. It was used as a huge grain bin until enough money was raised to complete the project. Jubilee Arena opened on February 26, 1962. The Curling rink was built shortly thereafter. Both places play a vital role in making Shaunavon a great place to live. |
