A little bit of our history..

Mortgage Burning Ceremony

At a special mortgage burning service in Centre Street United Church on Monday evening, Jan. 13, 1947 the red brick church on the hill was publicly proclaimed free of debt as documents that once held the record of indebtedness burned brightly to flame and turned to ashes before the eyes of the congregation. A Sort of History by Rev S.D. Robertson

When one starts out to write a history of a Church or congregation there are all sorts of challenges which confront one.  In this brief history I have chosen not to let that worry me and I am not trying to write anything definitive - just a rambling story.  There will be omission (sins thereof) and commission (sins thereof also) The history of this congregation goes back to around 1913 when a student minister was in the area and it was in that year that services were conducted in what is now the Bastura block by the resident minister - the Rev. Mr. David Pile.  This was a Presbyterian effort and the Methodists were also active.  It would appear that the building that was used prior to this one and which was located (and still is) on the corner of Centre St. and 4th Ave. was purchased in 1915 and used for 15 years.  Full story click here.
