On September 5 2021, a team of scientists, including former Shaunavon Resident Dennis Whyte, Director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT, made ground-breaking advances in fusion energy, altering the realm of carbon-free energy production altogether. That technological advance was the creation of the strongest fusion magnet in the world.
Last week, Dennis Whyte and his team made another incredible breakthrough in nuclear fusion - they have for the first time produced more energy in a fusion reaction than was used to ignite it, resulting in a net energy gain.
The scientists leading the project indicate that there is still a long road ahead before this energy source is viable, but this accomplishment still marks a significant advance to a sustainable power solution for the future.
