POSITION:  Maintenance Worker 1 (Temporary Full-Time)

DEPARTMENT:  Operations – Public Works

REPORTS TO:  Director of Public Works

POSITION PURPOSE

The Town of Shaunavon is seeking a dependable and hard-working individual to join our Operations Department as a  Temporary Full-Time Maintenance Worker 1 . This temporary position is being posted to cover an extended medical leave within the Public Works division.

Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the Maintenance Worker 1 performs semi-skilled manual labor and operational tasks related to the maintenance and repair of the Town’s roads, streets, water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, and stormwater drainage infrastructure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (ROADS & UTILITIES)

  • Water & Wastewater Utilities:  Assist with the routine maintenance, installation, and repair of the water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection network.

  • Roads & Streets Maintenance:  Perform street maintenance including pothole patching, asphalt/gravel repairs, curb and sidewalk repairs, and street sign installation/maintenance.

  • Winter & Drainage Operations:  Assist with seasonal winter road operations, including snow clearing/removal, spreading sand or salt, and keeping drainage gutters and culverts clear.

  • Equipment & Vehicle Operation:  Safely operate light-to-medium trucks, single-axle vehicles, hand tools, power tools, and basic Public Works equipment.

  • Equipment Maintenance:  Perform routine safety and maintenance inspections of vehicles, tools, and equipment.

  • Manual Labor:  Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions, including digging, shoveling, raking, hauling, and manual trench work.

  • Safety & Compliance:  Recognize occupational hazards in work activities and strictly follow safety precautions and OH&S standards.

  • Perform other related public works duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Education:  High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Driver’s License:  Valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving abstract. (Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Endorsement is considered an asset).

  • Experience:  Previous work experience in municipal public works, civil construction, utility maintenance, or heavy manual labor is an asset.

  • Skills & Abilities:

    • Demonstrated experience using common hand tools and standard equipment used in maintenance work.

    • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.

    • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills when dealing with co-workers and the public.

    • Water/Wastewater certification assets (Class 1 or 2 Water/Wastewater) are considered an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Physical Demands:  This is moderate/heavy work requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching, grasping, and repetitive motions. Requires strenuous manual labor including digging, shoveling, sweeping, raking, hauling, crawling, bending, twisting, and walking on rough terrain for extended periods.

  • Environmental Conditions:  Work is primarily performed outdoors and involves daily exposure to extreme cold, extreme heat, rain, snow, dust, dirt, noise, vibration, wet/humid conditions, grease/oils, fumes, moving parts of machinery, and extreme weather conditions.

TERM & TERMINATION CONDITIONS

  • Position Term:  This is a  Temporary Full-Time  position commencing as soon as possible, expected to last approximately  3 to 6 months , or until the return of the regular incumbent, whichever occurs first.

  • Wages & Benefits:  Wages and working conditions are set in accordance with the current SEIU-West Collective Bargaining Agreement under the  Maintenance 1  wage classification.

  • End of Term / Termination Clause:  This temporary appointment is subject to completion of operational requirements or the return of the regular employee. The Town reserves the right to conclude or adjust the temporary term at any time upon written notice or upon the early return of the regular incumbent. The conclusion of this temporary contract shall not constitute a layoff or entitle the employee to severance pay beyond the provisions of the SEIU-West Collective Bargaining Agreement.
