If These Walls Could Talk

The building at 346 Centre Street in Shaunavon has been the home of The Shaunavon Standard newspaper since August 1969.

Did you know that this building first opened in 1914 as Binkley’s Furniture Store, which also had funeral supplies at the back of the business? Through the years several different businesses operated out of this location.

On the Right Track

On the Right Track

The coming of the railroad was much anticipated by the people of Shaunavon and area. When the track layer arrived on December 1, 1913, The Shaunavon Standard reported that “it was marked by a feeling of rejoicing by both the farmers and business men. For months and years many of the local people had looked and waited for the time when the iron horse would bring them in touch with civilization.”

The Best Loafers in Town

The Best Loafers in Town

A story in the April 1940 edition of The Shaunavon Standard reported that the Crystal Bakery would turn out an average of 700 and more loaves of bread per day. Bread was baked six days per week, using an average of 400 pounds of flour per day.

Rodeo Baby Show

One of the most unusual and popular activities held at Shaunavon’s Frontier Day in 1914 was a Baby Show.

This photo shows the parade float designed to publicize the event. The float featured a nest containing 15 young contestants over which hovered a larger than life stork.

Shaunavon's Historic Firewall

Did you know that Shaunavon’s Firewall is one of only two that remain standing in the province of Saskatchewan?

It is located between the buildings that are currently occupied by Gehl’s General Store (265 Centre Street) and AME Mechanical (255 Centre Street).

Shaunavon's Got Talent

Shaunavon’s musical groups have kept us tapping our toes, singing a song, and burning up the dance floor for decades.

Children and adults alike have beat drums, tickled the ivories, clashed symbols, blown wind instruments, and strummed guitars, proving without a doubt that Shaunavon’s Got Talent!
